My ClueSSH application
Why did I publish my application? I wanted the whole community to see who I am (my background) and what I intend to do. I want to gather more feedback for my ideas.
I also wanted to bring some openness to the admission process: even if some can not vote yet, they should be able to express publicly their opinions on the application.
So here are the Q&A in my application form!
Short Answers:
1) Which Cluenet servers do you plan on using primarily?
LAMP: arbelos, cubed, scalar
2) What kind of system and network resources will you need?
SFTP or FTP service, MySQL, Apache httpd hosting space, Backup space, bandwidth, cpu time
3) If you could describe yourself in 3 words, what would those 3 words be?
creative, workaholic, dreamer
4) How did you find out about Cluenet?
Cluenet has hosted the Freedomware Game Fest. I did not take part in the actual games, but I had thought it is a marvelous idea.
5) About how much experience do you have with computers in general and *NIX sys$
My desktop computer is running Ubuntu since Ubuntu 6.10, I had briefly worked with Linux systems, but I am lacking expertise to tune Apache/MySQL. I need to read a manual/tutorial to build a website.
6) What are your interests, in order from most interested to least interested?
- Promote free software, creative commons;
- Enable others to learn about freedom;
- Make a living out of it.
7) What are your skills, from most skilled to least skilled?
Creativity, scenario thinking, problem solving, teamwork
8) What is your favorite food?
It's boiled corn flour with cheese. Don't know how you call it in English.
9) In your opinion, what is the most beautiful math equation ever derived?
Why? Because it gave us copper based circuitry and thus communication tools.
Essay Questions:
1) Tell us about yourself.
I got my first PC when I was in highschool, in the 9th grade. I studied the Cisco CCNA course at a local Cisco Network Academy when I was in high school. I got my first real Internet connection (unmetered usage) when I was in college. Now I work as a software developer at a proprietary company. I am an idealist, I tend to follow a dream. I require very little for myself and I want to leave a better world than the one I have found. Usually I think big, and I find it difficult to scale my thoughts down. I am the best guy you can find at adding complexity to an issue. Sometimes I find it difficult to get my point across and to understand other people.
2) What will you use your SSH access for? Be very specific, and give as much information as possible.
I intend to host web applications and to experiment with providing "free as in freedom" software services to the larger public. In the future, with your permission, I would like to experiment with making a free software cluster/grid. I am also interested in using Cluenet to provide other network services: game servers, groupware servers.
3) What do you think you can contribute to the Cluenet community?
I have creative marketing: I would like to experiment with different ways to drive sustainable growth of the Cluenet community:
- commercial free software developers could donate Cluenet money & resources to help them make a compelling business case;
- Same for hardware developers they need to show the world how good their product is;
- prospective admins need to learn how to administrate a large network of distributed servers, they could donate too;
- service providers could receive donations from their end-users, donating some back to us. I would like to contribute to expanding the Cluenet network and members;
- end-users can be, for a start, other free software projects, non-profit organizations.
4) This space is left intentionally blank. Please fill it with something that improves upon emptiness.
This is my understanding of Cluenet: it has wonderfully provided a meeting place for 3 kinds of resources:
- Money for hosting and bandwidth - so far donated by administrators themselves;
- maintainers/ server administrators - people with free time, eager to learn about free software;
- service providers/developers with new ideas.
This makes Cluenet a strong hosting provider to people who provide commercial freedom software services and expect donations as a payment. Those providers can donate some money back to Cluenet. Maybe this business model will or will not work for free software services, but I think it is worth experimenting with it. We need to help others expand and duplicate ClueNet all over the world. Although clueful chatting is the best innovation I had seen in a netiquette related issue since I use the Internet, I think we need a smoother admission process for new members.

I can't say any more then, WOW! This is how a application for SSH should look. Nice one :D
Very nicely done application, can't wait to see what you can do with your SSH access :)
Nice application, you'd be a great addition to the ClueNet community!
Just hang around in the irc chan a bit more, and we will be happy to have you.
