Cluenet accounts do not immediately get global access. First, you need to get a basic account, then you need to get access to the services that you want. You start out by getting a "basic account" which only has access to a few things. Then you can add access to it.

Getting a Basic Account

The process for getting a basic takes place on IRC. If you have not yet done so, please read the IRC section of our web site and join our IRC channel. CluePoints from the DaVinci bot play an important part in this process, so pay extra attention to that part of the IRC section.

To get a basic account, you need two things: 300 CluePoints, and 10 Account Points. CluePoints are generated by talking, read the IRC section for an explanation. Account Points are generated by votes in the IRC channel. Only certain authorized members can vote, but people can vote more than once. If you're familiar with existing IRC "karma" bots, you'll recognize the Account Points process as similar.

To initiate an account request, you need to be registered with PHPServ, and you need at least 100 CluePoints. You can get the other 200 while people vote on you. To initiate the account request, type "!reqacct" or "!requestaccount". Then people will be able to vote on you.

Someone votes on you by typing "!acctpts <YourPHPServUsername>++" or "!acctpts <YourPHPServUsername>--". They'll need to know your PHPServ username to vote, so make sure you tell them. The ++ command adds an account point, and the -- command removes an account point. You can find how many Acccount Points you have by typing "!acctpts <YourPHPServUsername>".

Once you have 10 Account Points, you can request an account token. When you have 10 account points, and you have 300 cluepoints (you need both), type "!getaccttoken". The bot will send an account token to you, which you can then enter into the web site to create an account. The new account web page is under the "Account" section.

Usernames must be between 3 and 20 characters, and must be lowercase letters, numbers, hyphens, or underscores. It must start with a letter, and cannot end with a hyphen or underscore. It also cannot contain more than a single consecutive hyphen or underscore.

After you select a username and enter your account token, it will display your IRC information. Verify that this is correct, and enter the CAPTCHA. Then it will create your account and give you a temporary password. Change your password right away by going to the change password section.

Getting more Privileges

Cluenet is composed of many servers which may have many different services. Access to each server is controlled individually. To get access to a service (for example, a shell account) on a server, you need to fulfill certain requirements. These requirements can be different for each server, but most servers use the same basic set, so if you fulfill the basic set of requirements, you will be able to access the service on most servers.

Requirements include a certain number of CluePoints, multiple choice quizzes, series of short answer questions, essays, and raw votes. For the freeform questions (short answer questions, raw votes, and essays), you are scored based on votes from other members of the Cluenet community.

To view a list of available services, go to the web site, log in, click on "Account", and click on "Privileges". You will see a list of available services along with your current status for each service. When you're first starting out, your status will probably be "You need to respond to some requirements" for every service. To continue, click on the name of a service that you want. I recommend talking with people on the IRC channel first to make sure that the service you pick works well and is stable.

When you select a service, you will see a list of requirements necessary for that service. Some of the requirements do not need responses (for example, CluePoints). For these, you will have a requirement status of either "Qualified" (if you already fulfill that requirement), or "Score Too Low" (you need more points). For requirements listed with a status of "Need Response", you need to submit a response to that requirement. To submit a response, click on the requirement, review the requirement data, and then click the "Respond" link. When you write the response, you will be given the opportunity to "activate" the response. You *must* activate your response to allow people to vote on it. If you want to save your current work and finish up later, just save the response without activating it. You will be able to edit and activate the response later.

Multiple Choice

You will be given a list of questions and possible responses. It's fairly self-explanatory. You will be able to view your score and potentially try again after you submit your response.

Short Answer

You will be given a list of questions. Responses to the questions can be short, and should be on one line. Approximately the right length is one sentence, but more are allowed if you have more to say.

Essay

You will be given an essay prompt and asked to respond. Essays should be longer than short answers, and length is often used to judge the effort put into the response. In general, essays should be 3 or 4 paragraphs long, and each paragraph four or five sentences. They don't need to be as long or as correct as school essays, but they should adequately answer the questions, and should show some effort.

Raw Votes

You don't need to write anything for these requirements. Just select the requirement and click the create response button. Make sure the response is activated. Then people will be allowed to vote on you.

After you fulfill all of the requirements for a service, click the "Get Access" button on the service page, and you will be granted access.
